Much has evolved in Kashmir since the release of Harud, hasn't it?

Indeed, significant transformations have occurred, not only in Kashmir but across India. The narrative post-2019 suggested that Kashmir was being integrated into the mainstream, yet it feels more like India is experiencing a 'Kashmirisation'.

Inspiration Behind 'Harud'

What motivated you to create Harud?

When I embarked on this project, my focus wasn't on audience reception or the film's success. The mere fact that I completed the film was fulfilling for me, as everything else was beyond my influence.

Hypothetical Changes to 'Harud'

If you were to remake Harud today, what would you alter?

This question wasn't posed to me shortly after the film's release. As my debut film, it was produced with limited resources, restricting my ability to explore different avenues. We had to adapt to challenges that could have been addressed with a larger budget, but this necessity led to a more organic and rewarding filmmaking experience. In hindsight, I might have aimed for broader accessibility, but ultimately, I created the film I envisioned.

What inspired the creation of Harud?

The film emerged partly from a sense of monotony and partly from a desire to authentically portray a Kashmiri narrative.

Challenges in Today's Film Landscape

Do you believe you could produce Harud in today's environment?

Securing funding in India for a film addressing the political issues surrounding Kashmir is nearly impossible. After years of effort, I ended up self-producing The Winter Within, with some post-production support from France and Doha. Although it garnered audience awards at festivals in Busan and Nantes, it struggled to find distributors.

Limited Screen Appearances

Why do you appear infrequently on screen?

I don't have a clear answer regarding my acting opportunities. Perhaps the unspoken recession plays a role. One would expect that after participating in a commercially successful film like Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, which celebrated its two-year anniversary on July 28, I would receive more offers. Additionally, having a strong social media presence is deemed crucial today. I find myself ill-equipped to engage with an online audience or to promote myself effectively. It is what it is.
